The greatest threat to India's Tea production is ...

January 22, 2019

Flooding, landslides, extreme frost?

It is a sign of just how unpredictable climate change has become that within just 6 months all of these catastrophes have had a substantial impact on India's agricultural sector.

And all of them have been "once in a lifetime" events.

During our work with Fairtrade NAPP we witnessed first hand the devastation caused by Kerala's worst floods in 100 years. Just a few months later our NEXO weather stations have captured the coldest snap experienced by the tea producing areas of Munnar India in over 40 years.

One NEXO weather station, located in the Kannan Devan Hills Plantations Company, has given a dramatic insight into just how extreme this has been.

For 12 nights in a row temperatures have plunged to -1°C and then over the period of just a few hours climbed to 23°C or above. This rapid freezing and thawing is causing huge damage to the tea plantations and will impact yields for months to come.

This interview from a KDHP official highlights just how big an impact the extreme conditions are having on this important cash crop. Of course these impacts are felt most keenly by smallholder farmers, who often lack the tools to protect themselves

Climate Edge is working with Fairtrade NAPP, in association with the Climate Academy project, to provide smallholder farmers with the tools and services necessary to survive these increasingly unpredictable events.
